Infection Prevention Coordinator

Location: Fairfield, California

Job Summary

The Infection Prevention Coordinator (IPC) works independently and collaboratively to support infection prevention programs in accordance with CMS, TJC, and hospital policies. This role serves as a resource for infection prevention, providing surveillance, monitoring, prevention, and education related to infection control. The IPC applies critical thinking and judgment to daily issues and escalates problems as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

• Foster a positive, collaborative environment among department members and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with leadership to plan, implement, and evaluate infection prevention programs.
• Develop and perform surveillance strategies for hospital- and community-acquired infections.
• Create record-keeping systems and prepare statistical reports to analyze infection trends.
• Use computer programs for tracking and reporting infection data.
• Investigate infection hazards and deviations, recommend and coordinate prevention measures, and evaluate their effectiveness.
• Serve as a resource in partnership with infectious disease leadership.
• Provide consultative support to hospital departments for safe healthcare delivery.
• Monitor regulatory and accreditation standards and propose program changes as needed.
• Develop and maintain infection prevention policies, including OSHA, TB, and bloodborne pathogen standards.
• Participate in performance improvement initiatives and develop monitoring tools.
• Apply epidemiological principles to manage infection outbreaks or clusters.
• Influence inpatient care practices related to infection prevention, including isolation precautions.
• Participate in daily inpatient rounds for surveillance and infection prevention education.
• Collaborate with Occupational/Employee Health on communicable disease referrals, policy revisions, staff immunizations, and health projects.
• Maintain current knowledge in infection prevention through continuing education and professional involvement.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Infection Control, including experience within the last year.
• Minimum 5 years of acute care experience.
• Experience in supervisory roles.
• Strong knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
• Strong knowledge of Cal-OSHA standards.
• Strong knowledge of CMS standards.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Typically works eight-hour days; hours may vary based on workload and projects.
• On-call support and occasional evening meetings required.
