Position Overview
The Clinical Nurse (RN) provides safe, competent, quality care to ICU patients based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. This role involves direct patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient education, and participation in quality and safety initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team on care plans.
- Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Mount Sinai Relationship Centered Care practices (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
- Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care; identify and escalate barriers.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential for quality and safety.
- Implement process improvement strategies and participate in peer reviews.
- Collaborate on quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice, and nursing research.
- Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Report safety hazards following institutional protocols.
- Document nursing practice using institutional IT systems to support quality initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate with management to ensure adequate supplies and inventory.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
- Document accurately in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
- Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
- Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
- Promote lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.

Qualifications
- Current New York State RN License
- BLS and ACLS certification
- Minimum 2 years RN experience, including 2 years critical care/telemetry experience
- Travel experience preferred but not required for Per Diem positions
- EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred
Unit Information
- Average Unit Census: 8 patients
- Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- Schedule: 3x12 hour shifts, every other weekend, variable shifts
