Job Opportunity: SICU Registered Nurse
Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 (adjusted based on skill level and acuity during float)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
On-Call: Not required
Floating: Required within scope to meet facility needs
Travel Pairs: Not allowed on this unit
First-Time Travelers: Accepted

Unit Description
- Specialty Intensive Care Unit (SICU) caring for a specialized patient population including trauma, cardiovascular surgery (e.g., TAVRs, CABGs), neurosurgery, and other complex surgical patients.
- Common diagnoses: acute ventilator needs, COVID+ with high oxygen demand, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), severe sepsis, unstable GI bleeds, trauma cases, open heart recovery, post-code blue, multi-system organ failure, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) needs.
- Skills required include interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, arterial line management, and blood product administration.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Competency in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Competency in arterial line management
- Competency in blood product administration
Additional Requirements & Information
- Must complete facility-specific documents including code of conduct, confidentiality agreement, Epic experience screening, orientation packet, and job description forms prior to start
- Facility uses Epic electronic health record system
- Parking is free
- Facility is a Level II Trauma Center with 431 staffed beds
- Scrub color: Navy blue
- Candidates must be prepared to float within their scope of practice as needed
- No block scheduling accommodations available
- References: Two required, including one from current year and one within last two years, from supervisors or equivalent clinical leaders outside this facility if previously employed here
- Work history verification for at least 2 years required
- Skills checklist required for all clinical candidates
Notes
- Candidates can renew BLS onsite but are responsible for fees and must complete renewals on days off
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) is not required for this position but may be required for ER roles
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually, with onsite options for renewal
- Drug screen must include specific panels such as amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, methamphetamines, opiates, oxycodone, PCP
- Facility does not guarantee same schedule for travel pairs and does not allow travel pairs on this unit
This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs comfortable with high-acuity patients and complex post-surgical care in a Level II Trauma Center environment.
