RN - NICU Travel Nurse

Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours: 12 hours per shift, 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 8 weeks

Job Description

• Assess patients on admission considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.
• Reassess patient health needs at least every shift and as warranted by condition changes.
• Establish and update individualized plans of care based on comprehensive data.
• Administer oral, topical, and parenteral medications following the 7 rights of medication administration.
• Assess and document medication effectiveness and any adverse effects.
• Perform treatments and procedures adhering to nursing best practices, hospital policies, sterile technique, standard precautions, and patient privacy.
• Document patient care, pain management, discharge planning, education, and progress accurately and legibly.
• Educate patients and families based on assessed needs using approved educational materials.
• Interpret diagnostic data and intervene appropriately.
• Communicate promptly any changes in patient condition to physicians and healthcare team members using SBAR communication for handoffs.
• Respect patient rights including confidentiality, safety, and participation in care planning.
• Participate in multidisciplinary care planning.
• Manage patients in restraints according to policy and understand application criteria.
• Follow National Patient Safety Goals and hospital policies including use of two patient identifiers.
• Understand and participate in disaster plans and life safety standards (Code Blue, Code Pink, Code Red, Haz Mat, Oxygen shut off).
• Adhere to infection control policies and blood transfusion protocols.
• Follow chain of command appropriately.
• Practice hand hygiene before and after patient contact.
• Follow guidelines for Core Measures and vaccine control.
• Demonstrate appropriate interaction with parents and family members.
• Administer age-appropriate medications including dosage calculations and route assessments.
• Be familiar with NICU policies and age-specific patient management techniques.
• Calculate correct fluid and nutritional intake for neonates.
• Obtain blood samples via central lines, heel sticks, and venipuncture.
• Set up, calibrate, interpret, discontinue, and document UAC (umbilical arterial catheter) lines.
• Use bedside monitoring equipment and be familiar with mechanical ventilators and patient assessments.
• Perform complete head-to-toe assessments using age-appropriate skills.
• Recognize normal vs. abnormal vital signs and intervene appropriately for neonates.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in California
• Minimum 3 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

• Night shift schedule with 3 shifts per week.
