Job Summary
The Physical Therapist evaluates, plans, and implements therapeutic programs to prevent, identify, correct, and alleviate movement dysfunctions of anatomical or physiological origin. Responsibilities include assessing patients’ motor and neurological capabilities, revising therapy programs as patients progress, instructing patients and families on therapeutic procedures, and coordinating care with other healthcare disciplines. The role may involve training therapy assistants, support staff, and students, delegating patient loads, and providing coverage across clinical areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate patients’ physical and functional status, including musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and functional mobility in daily activities.
- Analyze evaluation results and set short- and long-term treatment goals.
- Administer and monitor treatments such as modalities, therapeutic exercises, transfers, gait training, and functional mobility training.
- Determine and instruct on appropriate assistive devices for functional mobility.
- Reassess patient responses and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
- Coordinate treatment schedules with physical therapy staff and other disciplines.
- Maintain accurate documentation: evaluations, progress notes, discharge summaries, daily treatment records, and billing reports.
- Plan and document home exercise programs and instruct patients/families on continued therapy and device use.
- Participate in discharge planning to ensure continuity of rehabilitation care.
- Stay current with professional developments through literature and educational programs.
- Support continuous quality improvement efforts to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
- Assist in recommending and implementing departmental policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Physical Therapist license in Illinois
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Physical Therapist
- Experience practicing as a Physical Therapist within the last year
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds daily.
- Ability to stand for 3 or more hours continuously.
- Ability to stoop, bend, reach, grab, and demonstrate manual dexterity.
- Ability to push/pull supply carts, gurneys, and wheelchairs hourly.
- Ability to lift and position patients hourly.
- Ability to proofread and check documents for accuracy daily.
- Ability to read and manipulate equipment controls.
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS/BCLS) certification required.
