Job Opportunity: Med Surg 3CC RN
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Role: Registered Nurse (RN) in Med Surg 3CC unit
- Unit Size: 30 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Total joint replacement
- Spinal surgery
- Urology procedures
- Abdominal surgery (lap appendectomy, bowel resection)
- Bariatrics
- Medical overflow
- Frequent use of hemo hemovacs and JP drains
- Colostomies
- No gynecology patients (these go to maternity and cardiac MS Tele units)
Required Skills & Experience
- Prefer surgical experience, post-op care, and early ambulation experience
- Open to first-time travel nurses (prior travel experience not required)
- BLS Certification required
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Common drips: occasional heparin drip, PCA pump, TPN
Unit Support & Equipment
- Charge Nurse present on both shifts; occasionally takes a low acuity assignment at night
- Nurse aides/patient care techs available with a ratio of 1 tech per 12 patients
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes nasal cannula; RT staff perform treatments
- Remote telemetry monitoring with techs interpreting strips; RNs do not read their own strips
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts:
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Scheduling managed by unit manager; block scheduling possible if unit needs are met
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: as needed
- Floating: Required to float to medical and telemetry units, assisting with strips and medical patients
- Dress code: Any color scrubs allowed
- Bedside shift report is expected
- Unit culture described as close-knit and positive
Additional Notes
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start
- Candidates must live within a 50-mile radius
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity
Specialty Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; preference for surgical/post-op experience suggests at least some prior Med Surg experience is beneficial.
