Job Summary
Provide nursing care on a medical-surgical unit in a Level II trauma center. The unit has 43 beds with patient ratios of 1:5 and 1:6. The shift is nights from 7 PM to 7 AM, with a 36-hour workweek and a recommendation to work at least 2 weekend shifts per month.
Unit & Patient Population
- Medical-Surgical unit
- Patient population: Adults (18 years and older)
- Common diagnoses: cirrhosis, sepsis, pneumonia, respiratory illnesses, wounds, congestive heart failure (CHF)
- Equipment used: vital signs machine, bladder scanner, IV pumps, thermal imaging, lifts, tube feeding pumps
- Electronic Health Record (EHR) system: Cerner
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Mexico
- Minimum 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

- Block scheduling may be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Patient ratios typically 1:5 or 1:6

- Must have at least a 3.2 overall rating on skills checklist

Pros
Unit is comprised of many travelers. Core staff and travelers have all been fantastic! The unit is set up quite well to manage the surges of patients. It is the only main hospital around so it can definitely provide good experience. Most of the providers I've encountered over the last couple months actually listen to the nurses and are easy to work with.
Cons
It is definitely busy before the size of the town. I can't say I have any other cons.
