Histology Tech - Travel/Contract

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Laboratory (Histology Tech)
  • Shift: Days, Monday to Friday, 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Occasional weekend work required
  • No on-call duties
  • No floating required
  • Worksite: Single campus location

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex histologic procedures including processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains, and immunohistochemistry
  • Conduct quality control on completed slides and identify issues affecting diagnosis
  • Record observations and document maintenance of lab instruments and equipment
  • Comply with established laboratory policies and procedures

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Histology Technologist
  • Recent histology technologist experience within the last year
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Certification as HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in histotechnology, biology, or related scientific discipline
  • Quality Improvement in Healthcare Certification (QIHC)

Licensing & Certification Notes

  • Must have active, unencumbered certification/license verified by primary source
  • BLS certification must be current and from AHA or ARC (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
  • Certifications expiring within 30 days of start date are not accepted; renewal or scheduled course required prior to start

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or documented history with chest x-ray as applicable
  • Annual TB questionnaire completion required
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31) with documentation uploaded prior to deadline

Compliance & Documentation

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Background check within 1 year including: SSN trace, criminal, sex offender registry, national criminal, and state-specific searches
  • Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
  • Copy of driver’s license/state ID and social security card required
  • Primary source verification of certifications and licenses required
  • Color blindness test required prior to start
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge (frontal view, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses) required before start
  • Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed prior to orientation (approx. 2 hours)
  • Radiation badge not required for this position

Additional Information

  • Radius rule: 60 miles; local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation; travelers should consider this before accepting assignments during peak months (Aug-Sept)
