Registered Nurse – General Medicine PCU (Ventilator Experience Required)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Schedule & Shift Details
- Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday during the 13-week contract
- Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
- Floating: Required to float within skillset as needed
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit Type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with hybrid beds (10 PCU beds, 2 ICU beds)
- Patient Types: Ventilator and trach-dependent patients, chronic respiratory failure, DKA, COPD, sepsis, suicide/overdose, renal failure
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, goal 1:4
- Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitoring on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) Certification
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
- Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
- Ventilator care for chronic trach and ventilator-dependent patients
- Rapid Response and Code team activation
- Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
Licensure Requirements
- Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse – General Medicine PCU with ventilator experience
- Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; ventilator experience required

Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
- Background Check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start, including education verification and multiple federal/state checks

- Physical Exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (specific mask types accepted)

- Immunizations or positive titers required for: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination documentation or mask/declination form during flu season
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
- Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance checklists prior to start
- References: 2 clinical references required
- Skills checklist updated annually
Additional Notes
- EPIC charting experience required
- Locals accepted under radius rule
- Must review and acknowledge orientation materials prior to start (inpatient RNs exempt as of 7/10/23)
- Facility is a large acute care hospital with Level I Trauma Center designation and Magnet status
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Ventilator experience required, including care for chronic trach and ventilator-dependent patients
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Proficient in dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Experience in emergency response and rapid response/code team activation
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
