Registered Nurse - MICU (North Carolina, Wilmington)

Job Overview

• Unit: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
• Shift: Night shift, 12 hours (18:45 - 07:15), 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week)
• Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
• Float Requirement: Yes, may float to Medsurg if needed
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend, minimum 6 weekend shifts per contract
• Call Requirement: None
• Scheduling: Self-scheduled
• Unit Orientation: 24 hours

Patient Diagnoses

• Sepsis
• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Heart Failure

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience in specialty
• Prior travel experience required; first-time travelers not accepted
• Skills include:

  • Management and interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Care of patients with multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
  • 12 lead EKG/ECG acquisition
  • Central Venous Pressure (CVP) monitoring
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Management of liver failure, acute kidney injury, chronic/acute renal failure
  • Intake and output monitoring, urine output assessment
  • Accessing/managing ports and central lines
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Starting and maintaining IVs, TPN/Lipids
  • Continuous IV sedation and procedural sedation administration/monitoring
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Assistance with chest tube insertion/removal
  • BiPAP/CPAP and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) management
  • Ventilator management and suctioning (ETT, NT)
  • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
  • Infection prevention and isolation precautions/PPE
  • Phlebotomy and coagulation labs (PT/PTT, INR)
  • Recognition of infection in immunosuppressed patients
  • Management of high-output drains

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Experience in Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), Neuro ICU, Surgical ICU
• Thermoregulation (hypothermia/hyperthermia)
• Post cardiac surgery care (not directly from OR)
• GI surgery experience
• PICC line management
• Previous charge nurse experience
• Community hospital experience

Required Certifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification

Required Licenses

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for North Carolina

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background check within 6 months prior to start
• Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months prior to start
• Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start (or documentation of past positive TB with appropriate follow-up)
• Immunizations or titers for:

  • Rubeola (Measles)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form if titer negative/equivocal)
  • Varicella
• Physical exam (per Aya Healthcare standards)
• Flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement during flu season
• Education verification and transcript/diploma as applicable
• References and performance evaluations as applicable
• Competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must pass with 82% or higher within 72 hours of start)
• Medication/pharmacology competency exam
• Color blindness testing within 1 year
• Orientation safety manual acknowledgement
• Facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, hospital policies, medication safety training, and annual compliance training
• Photo for badge (passport style, white background, business attire) required immediately after signing contract

Additional Notes

• Candidates must have prior travel experience; first-time travelers will not be accepted.
• Float to Medsurg unit may be required.
• No call requirement.
• Weekend shifts required every other weekend with a minimum of 6 weekend shifts per contract.
• Orientation is 24 hours on unit.
• Self-scheduling for shifts.
• Candidate must complete all required facility-specific education and compliance modules prior to start.
• Candidate must complete the Epic test-out option if eligible (optional, with prior Epic experience).
• Radiation badge not required for this position.

This position is ideal for experienced MICU RNs with prior travel assignments who are comfortable managing critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and interventions in a fast-paced ICU environment.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
• Minimum 2 years of Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience
• MICU experience within the last year
• Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
• Prior traveler experience required; first-time travelers not accepted
• ACLS certification
• BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
