Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Surgical Services (Operating Room)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • Call: Up to 4 call shifts per month (End of Shift to 7 AM)
  • Schedule: As needed, including 1 weekend shift per month (Saturday or Sunday, 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • Floating: Yes, may be required to float within scope to meet facility needs or between like units

Required Experience & Skills

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 2 years as a Certified Surgical Technologist
  • Preferred Experience: Neuro (spines/crani), ENT (flaps), Robotics (Da Vinci Xi) cases highly preferred
  • Common Case Types: Orthopedics (total joints, spine, trauma), Neurosurgery (crani, spine), ENT (flaps), Robotics, Transplants/Procurements, Trauma/Burns, GU/GYN
  • First-time travelers: Accepted

Certifications & Licenses

  • Required Certifications:
    • NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (NCCT NOT accepted)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) only
  • Radiation Badge: Required and must be provided by the agency
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center experience preferred

Facility & Work Environment

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • Main Operating Room with 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Dynamic, nurse-driven environment with cutting-edge technology
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Scrub color provided
  • Parking permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Certified OR Tech / Surgical Technologist (CST)
  • Surgical Technologist experience within the last year
  • NBSTSA certification required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Experience in a Level 1 trauma center required

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide proof of work eligibility (I-9, Driver’s License/State ID, Social Security Card)
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and employment verification required
  • Education verification and diploma/transcripts preferred
  • Fit test for N95 mask required within 90 days prior to start and annually thereafter
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccinations
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccination series or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (flu declinations NOT accepted)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Annual physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start
  • Clear, passport-style photo required for badge issuance

Important Notes

  • Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June - November)
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
  • Local candidates within 60 miles may be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • All required documentation and certifications must be current and valid at time of start
  • Radiation badge processing may take 5-7 days; candidates cannot start without it
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
