Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg Ortho/Neuro
Location: Medford, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Department: Med/Surg Neuro Ortho
- Unit Size: 34 beds (4 semi-private)
- Common Diagnoses: Strokes, spines, traumatic brain injuries, altered mental status, total joints, external fixation, fractures
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Dayshift: 1:4-5
- Nightshift: 1:5-6
- Nurse Aide Ratios:
- Dayshift: 1:6-7
- Nightshift: 1:7-8
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: No ventilators; CPAP used at night for maintenance
- Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitored by tele tech on separate unit; RNs should understand strip interpretation and lethal rhythms
Shift & Scheduling
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts (1845-0715)
- Scheduling: No accommodations for scheduling requests; travelers fill schedule gaps, no block scheduling
- Weekend & Holiday: No fixed weekend or holiday requirements; may rotate every other weekend or as needed
- Floating: Travelers float first within skill set; may float to other med surg units, ICU (resource), ER (holds), or act as sitter
Required Qualifications
- Licensure: RN license required; non-Oregon licensed RNs may apply and be eligible for a 90-day temporary Oregon license if permanent license is not posted before assignment start
- Certifications: BLS required; NIHSS preferred
- Experience:
- Stroke and neuro experience is mandatory
- Preferred: Experience with total joints (precautions, ambulating, awareness)
- For night shift: Strong neuro and ortho experience highly preferred
- Prior Travel Experience: Preferred for night shift candidates with neuro and ortho experience
Orientation & Training
- Orientation: 12 hours non-billable orientation during first work week (2 shifts of 12 hours)
- Unit-specific orientation provided
Work Environment & Policies
- Call Off Policy: Client may cancel up to 24 hours per 13-week contract
- Local Radius: Candidates within 50 miles are not accepted
- Dress Code: Any colored professional scrubs allowed; no visible tattoos above shoulders; only facial piercing allowed is nose stud; natural hair colors only (no unnatural colors like pink or blue)
- Teamwork: High emphasis on teamwork, bedside report, and hourly rounding
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, does not take patient assignments
- Break Nurse and House Supervisor available 24/7
Additional Notes
- Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
- Travelers are expected to be flexible and fill staffing needs as required
