Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Oncology 6S Unit
Location: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Overview
- 36-bed unit specializing in Post-Op, Oncology, and Telemetry patients
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
- Patients include general MedSurg, post-op laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendectomy (no ortho post-op), oncology patients with complications (neutropenic precautions, pneumonia, infections), and occasional psychiatric patients requiring 1:1 sitter
- Frequent use of chest tubes; experience with PleurX chest tubes is a significant plus
- Phillips telemetry monitors used; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips (central monitor tech available)
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current BLS (AHA) certification required
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) / ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy certification is a plus but not mandatory
Experience & Skills
- Experience with oncology patients and chemotherapy administration preferred
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips required
- Experience managing chest tubes, including PleurX, highly desirable
- No cardiac drip titration required; only Heparin drip titrated on unit
- Prior travel experience not specified as required
Patient Care & Responsibilities
- RNs titrate Heparin drips only; no cardiac drips (e.g., amiodarone, dopamine) are titrated
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP and BiPAP; respiratory therapists manage these, not RNs
- Charge nurse available 24/7; day shift charge nurse does not take patient assignments, night shift charge nurse does
- CNAs support the unit with a ratio of 3 CNAs on day shift and 3 on night shift
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- 12-hour day shifts (7 AM – 7 PM)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) for both day and night shifts
- Holiday work included in permanent staff rotation schedule
- Floating may be required to other MedSurg or Telemetry units
- Dress code: Royal blue scrubs for RNs
- No false nails allowed

Cons
Was told in phone interview that max ratio would be 1:9. Reality was 1:15. Unit was considered transitional, but patients were more like med/surg. Not willing to risk my license for such unsafe ratios.
