Job Opportunity: Med Surg 3CC RN

Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Details

  • Unit Type: Med Surg 3CC
  • Number of Beds: 30
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 1:4-5
    • Nights: 1:5-6
  • Common Patient Diagnoses/Procedures:
    • Total joint replacement
    • Spinal surgery
    • Urology procedures
    • Abdominal surgery (lap appendectomy, bowel resection)
    • Bariatrics
    • Medical overflow
    • Frequent use of hemo hemovacs and JP drains
    • Colostomies
  • No gynecology patients (these go to maternity and cardiac MS Tele units)

Required Skills & Experience

  • Specialty: Med Surg 3CC RN
  • Preferred: Surgical experience, post-op care, early ambulation experience
  • Open to first-time travel nurses (prior travel experience NOT required)
  • Years of experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 1+ year Med Surg experience preferred

Certifications

  • BLS Certification required

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RNs are NOT required to titrate drips
  • Common drips/pumps encountered: occasional heparin drip, PCA pump, TPN
  • Charge Nurse present on both shifts; may take a low acuity assignment on nights occasionally
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs present with ratio approximately 1 tech per 12 patients
  • Respiratory Therapy equipment includes nasal cannula; RT staff perform treatments
  • Telemetry/monitor techs available remotely; RNs do NOT read their own strips
  • Floating: Required to float to medical and telemetry units, assist with strips, and take medical patients

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM
  • Scheduling: Manager creates schedule; 7-on/7-off rotation will not occur more than weekly
  • Block scheduling may be considered if unit needs are met
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: As needed
  • Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed
  • Bedside shift report expected
  • Unit culture described as close-knit and positive

Additional Notes

  • Radius rule: Candidates must be within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals after submission

This position is suitable for Med Surg RNs with surgical/post-op experience who are comfortable with a moderate nurse-to-patient ratio and floating to related units. First-time travel nurses are welcome.
