Job Summary: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Schedule

  • Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Floating: May float to Pediatrics and NICU; additional float units possible based on skill set and hospital needs (floating confirmed with traveler)
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2+
  • Unit Size: 19 beds

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU critical care experience required
  • 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
  • Prior travel experience required (first-time travelers are not accepted)

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring
  • Proficient in BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies
  • Charting system: EPIC

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA required
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Required for all Adult Critical Care Units; confirm if required for PICU
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - Preferred but not required
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit and role (e.g., Management of Assaultive Behavior for ER/Peds ER/Behavioral Health RNs)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches
  • Drug Screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within required timeframes)
    • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (annual requirement)
    • Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (documentation required)
  • Fit Testing: On-site fit test required; facial hair must be shaved unless approved accommodation is provided
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance: Required prior to start, must be updated annually
  • Color Blind Testing: Required if job tasks require color discrimination (within 1 year)
  • Competency Exams: Medication/Pharmacology, Dysrhythmia/EKG, and other unit-specific competency exams required within 72 hours of signing contract
  • Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually
  • Work History Verification: Minimum 1 year prior work history verified (New Jersey state requirement)
  • References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment Application or Resume: Must include 7 years of work history with all gaps accounted for

  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and education sign-offs prior to start
  • Floating policy must be acknowledged for every new assignment or site transfer
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements to clear for assignment

This position is ideal for experienced PICU nurses with prior travel experience who are comfortable working in a fast-paced pediatric critical care environment and meeting comprehensive credentialing and compliance standards.
