Registered Nurse - Emergency Room (ER)

Location: San Francisco, California

Job Description

  • Primarily assigned to Emergency Department (ED) hold position.
  • Must float to Medical-Surgical (MS) and Telemetry (Tele) units when not utilized in ED hold.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Evidence-based nursing practice with knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and regulatory standards.
    • Clinical procedures such as IV insertion, Foley catheter care, and wound dressings.
    • Patient and family education.
    • Proper use of telemetry monitoring, ventilators, and safe medication administration.
    • Recognizing and responding to changes in patient condition.
    • Acting as patient advocate and reporting errors or near misses.
    • Working independently and collaboratively within the healthcare team.
    • Maintaining professional appearance and completing tasks timely.

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend rotation required
  • No on-call requirement

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by AHA or ARC
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by AHA or ARC

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 6 months of start, including social security trace with all aliases, county searches, nationwide sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening.
  • Annual updates required for EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and FACIS screenings.
  • Education verification required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred but not mandatory.
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months of start (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids due to California law).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including clearance for work and any necessary accommodations.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start, renewed annually (with provisions for religious exemptions and PAPR training if failed).
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 90 days, renewed annually
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination as per protocol
    • Hepatitis B series or signed declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov 1 - Apr 30) or signed declination with mask requirement in patient care areas
  • Drug testing and immunization documentation must be uploaded with appropriate expiration dates.

Additional Requirements

  • Full 7 years of work history documented with no gaps, including city and state of employment.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required, renewed annually.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years for clinical acute care candidates.
  • Completion and signing of facility-specific documents prior to start, including:
    • Job description acknowledgment
    • Standards of business conduct
    • Code of conduct
    • Vendor training
    • TB screening questionnaire
    • Conditional offer of employment attestation
    • Religious accommodation forms if applicable
  • Competency exams as applicable, including medication/pharmacology, telemetry, dysrhythmia/EKG, and others as required by unit or position.
  • ICU RNs may be required to take an onsite EKG exam after start.

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
  • Floating to MS/Tele units is mandatory when not working in ED hold.
  • Professional appearance and ability to accept constructive feedback are emphasized.
  • No on-call duties required.

This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Department RNs who are flexible to float to other units and are comfortable working night shifts with weekend rotations.
