Job Opportunity: Sterile Processing Tech (SPT)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Evening (Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM), 5x8 hour shifts
Weekend Requirement: No weekends required, but holiday rotation applies
Local Radius: 60 miles
Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis


Job Summary

This is a temporary-to-permanent opportunity with preference given to candidates interested in a permanent role. The position involves supervisory responsibilities within Sterile Processing, including floating between multiple sterile processing departments as needed.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervision & Leadership (30%)

    • Direct supervision of Lead Technicians, Tech I-III, and Non-Certified Technicians across all sterile processing areas (decontamination, prep/pack, sterilization, case carts, sterile storage)
    • Assign daily staff tasks based on workload and priorities
    • Oversee instrument tracking systems, documentation, and inventory control
    • Collaborate on orientation and training plans
  • Department Advancement & Expectations (30%)

    • Coordinate daily operations to meet surgical and procedural demands
    • Monitor tray turnaround times, instrument availability, and case cart readiness
    • Troubleshoot equipment, instrument, and workflow issues
    • Ensure proper segregation of clean/dirty workflows and infection prevention compliance
    • Maintain adherence to AAMI ST79, AORN guidelines, CDC recommendations, and regulatory standards
  • Coordination & Management of Specialty Services (30%)

    • Audit tray assembly accuracy, count sheets, peel packs, and labeling
    • Address service concerns and implement service recovery
    • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings related to instrumentation and quality initiatives
  • Sterile Processing Duties (10%)

    • Monitor infection control, safety, and universal precautions
    • Organize, store, and distribute instruments and equipment
    • Prepare instrument trays and equipment for sterilization
    • Perform decontamination and sterilization of instruments and supplies

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician
  • Sterile Processing Technician experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment
  • Experience in supervisory roles within sterile processing

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to float between main sterile processing departments and sister facilities as needed
  • First-time travelers not accepted
  • Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Physical assessment for sterile processors required, completed and signed by a licensed provider within 1 year of start
  • Fit test for N95 mask (specific models required) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Required health documents include:
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest x-ray if previously positive
    • Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start
    • CBC and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) with differential (due to chemical exposure risk)
  • COVID vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and safety manual acknowledgment prior to start
  • Clear, passport-style photo required for badge (frontal view, business casual attire)
  • Participation in emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November) is mandatory
