Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatrics / MST Unit
Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Mixed unit caring for both adult and pediatric patients; patient ratio varies and may include more adults than pediatric patients at times.
- Unit size: 10 beds
- Patient ratios: Pediatrics 1:3-4, MST (Medical-Surgical-Telemetry) 1:5
- Float requirements include MST unit on Emergency Care (EC), Medical Care Unit (MCU), and birthing unit (mom-baby couplets). Labor and delivery float possible with experience.
- Telemetry monitoring for adult MST patients; RNs must be able to read telemetry strips. Remote Monitor Techs available. Pediatric patients monitored with bedside monitors.
Patient Types & Common Diagnoses
- Surgical: total hip & knee replacement, small bowel resection, hysterectomy, exploratory laparoscopy
- Medical: MRSA, C-diff infections, COPD, pneumonia, COVID-19
- Telemetry: chest pain
- Pediatrics: respiratory illnesses (RSV, Influenza, COVID), chronic seizures, dehydration, appendectomy, failure to thrive (med-surg level pediatric care)
- No feeding tubes, tracheostomies, or ventilators on unit; assist with stabilization and transfer if needed
- Care for stable adult patients requiring BiPAP or high flow oxygen for transfer stabilization
Required Certifications & Exams
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- Must pass dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing (failure results in 6-month disqualification for this region)
Experience & Skills
- Experience working with children is required
- Must be willing and able to care for both adult and pediatric patients
- Strong nursing skills preferred; unit may have less experienced permanent staff (e.g., new grads or nurses returning to acute care)
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips on this unit
Staffing & Support
- Nurse Aides (NAs) care for 10 patients; if no NA, RN cares for 3 patients
- Charge Nurse oversees 50 inpatient beds including MST, Pediatrics, and MCU units
Scheduling & Work Hours
- 12-hour night shifts (0700/1900 – 1930/0730)
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Friday and Saturday nights; Saturday and Sunday days)
- Holiday rotation to distribute holidays fairly
- Standby/call rotation during low census periods
Orientation & Dress Code
- Hospital and unit-specific orientation based on experience
- Adult MST Telemetry experience required for night shifts and float assignments
- Dress code: Navy scrubs
Additional Requirements
- Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and may not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any affiliated facilities within the past year
Summary of Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 3 years of pediatric nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
- Experience working with pediatric patients
- Telemetry experience, including ability to read telemetry strips
- Ability to care for both pediatric and adult patients
- Successful completion of dysrhythmia exam prior to contract
- Ability to float to multiple units including MST, MCU, and birthing unit
- Must meet radius and employment history restrictions
