RN (Registered Nurse) - Float Position

Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 (typically 3 weekend shifts in 4 weeks)


Job Overview

  • Float RN to general medical and surgical units, covering areas of greatest need within medical units only.
  • Patient ratios typically 1:5-6.
  • Care for a diverse patient population with diagnoses including chronic illnesses (COPD, Diabetes, CHF, ESRD), GI issues (pancreatitis, bleeding, gastroparesis, IBD), infections (pneumonia, cellulitis, sepsis, UTI, C. diff), neurological conditions (stroke, dementia, TBI), and mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, substance abuse).
  • Patients may undergo procedures such as colonoscopies, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bronchoscopy, and minor surgeries (lap chole, I&D, biopsies, amputation).

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1.5 years of experience in Level 1, Level 2, or tertiary care settings.
  • At least 1 year of MedSurg experience at a large hospital (600+ beds).
  • Current Indiana RN license or compact RN license (effective as of 7/1/20).
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Skills and Responsibilities

  • Perform general medical-surgical nursing care including assessments, care planning, and inter-professional communication.
  • Utilize electronic health records (Epic) and equipment such as IV pumps (Hospira), wound vacs, feeding pumps and tubes, chest tubes, telemetry monitoring, pyxis machines, Accucheck blood glucose monitors, and SCDs for VTE prevention.
  • Manage IV therapy, including heparin and insulin drips.
  • Participate in hospital orientation and nursing-specific Jump Start orientation (1 day general hospital + ~5 days nursing orientation including Epic training).

Schedule and Work Environment

  • 12-hour day shifts, approximately 36 hours per week.
  • Floating limited to other medical units only.
  • Dress code: Caribbean Blue scrubs.
  • Orientation includes 8 non-billable hours; returning clinicians within 12 months are not eligible for non-billable orientation.
  • Call-off policy allows cancellation up to 24 hours before shift during the 13-week assignment.

  • Local candidates within 50 miles may be eligible for a rate adjustment.
  • Candidates should disclose any required time off during the assignment.
