Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbia, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Description

  • Medical Surgical unit with a maximum capacity of 57 beds, serving internal medicine patients with diverse medical diagnoses.
  • Room features include video monitoring, sitter rooms (up to 4 sitters for 2 patients), ceiling lifts, and bariatric rooms.
  • Charge nurse and supervisor present on every shift.
  • Required to float between Medical Surgical and Medical Surgical/Telemetry units.

Patient Ratios

  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 on night shifts (can go up to 1:7).

Required Experience

  • Prefer 2 years of Medical Surgical experience; will consider candidates with at least 1.5 years if highly qualified.
  • First-time travel nurses are welcome (no prior travel experience required).
  • No local candidates within 50 miles accepted.

Work Requirements

  • Must work at least 50% of holidays during the contract; no time off granted for holidays but scheduling flexibility offered to meet this requirement.
  • Rotating shifts, holiday work, and work during inclement weather required.
  • Must be able to ambulate, reach, and move objects weighing 20+ lbs.
  • Routine exposure to patients with contagious illnesses.
  • Ability to work full shifts, take call, and work assigned weekends.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
  • Minimum of 1.5 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with recent experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification preferred (Blue Card required for Psych/Behavioral Health; can be completed onsite if not obtained prior).

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 60 days of start, including alias search, counties lived/worked/schooled, federal and national criminal, sex offender, social security trace, and international checks if applicable.
  • Missouri Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) or Missouri Caregiver search must be on file within 60 days before starting (cannot start with both pending).
  • E-Verify proof required.
  • Drug screening: Negative 7-panel drug test within 60 days of start.
  • Photo ID (driver’s license or state ID) required.
  • Employment application/resume must document at least 7 years of employment history with no gaps over 30 days.
  • Two professional references within the last 2 years required.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (agency form acceptable).
  • Fit mask test valid within 1 year (3M 1870+, 1860R, 1860S, or 9205 models).
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination within 10 years or approved medical/religious exemption.
  • Negative TB test (QGold, TSpot, or 2-step PPD) within 1 year, updated annually; chest x-ray required if positive TB history.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines (at least one after 1980) required. No declinations accepted; medical exemptions require facility approval.
  • Hepatitis B: Completed series or positive/reactive titer required; declinations no longer accepted for new candidates after 7/1/2023.
  • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted; medical exemptions require facility approval.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31).

Additional Notes

  • Orientation Safety Manual and HIPAA acknowledgment required.
  • Must be able to work at the assigned location for the full contract term.
  • This position is active and requires physical stamina and flexibility.
