Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (also options for 48 hours/week)


Job Description

  • Must be available for the first 2 weeks for orientation.
  • Float to other Medical Surgical units approximately once per week, depending on need.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Staffing ratio: 1:5-6 patients on nights; may flex to 7-8 patients with LPN support.
  • Patient population includes medical patients and specialties such as ortho/neurovascular, cardio/pulmonary, and surgical (GI, urology, hysterectomies, mastectomies).
  • Must be willing to work with a variety of staff (RNs, LPNs, Techs).
  • Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed or approved at this time.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical/Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Certifications (as applicable by unit)

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – AHA only.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – AHA only.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – AAP or American Medical Learning Center only.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – required for Emergency Room positions.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) – as applicable.
  • Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC) – as applicable.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) – as applicable.
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) – as applicable.
  • NIH Stroke Certification – must be updated annually.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
  • Complete E-Verify process as required by contract.
  • Proof of name change documentation if applicable.
  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, SSN trace, national/statewide criminal and sex offender searches, education verification, and motor vehicle record (MVR) search.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions; not typically required for this role but process details provided if applicable.
  • Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if 10-panel).
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine).
    • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/T-Spot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required.
    • Annual TB questionnaire.
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; exemptions not accepted.
    • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination required.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1; exemption requests must be submitted promptly.

Competency Requirements

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam completed within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%.
  • Specialty competency exam completed within 1 year prior to start with a passing score of at least 80%.

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Review and sign the facility’s Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start.
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required.
  • Fit testing for N95 masks may be required depending on unit and role; must be completed onsite with specified mask model.
  • Vaccine exemption forms must be completed and approved if applicable.
