Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM (3 shifts per week, 12-hour shifts)
  • Hours per week: 36 hours
  • On-call: 1 weekend per month (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 additional 8-hour shifts per week
  • Weekend Requirement: Refer to on-call schedule
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work 1 of 2 or 2 of 3 holidays as needed by the unit
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required; familiarity with OR Manager (PICIS) preferred
  • Floating: Must float within skillset without exception
  • Scrubs: Provided by hospital
  • Accepts: First-time travelers and local candidates

Required Qualifications

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association

Education

  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Experience

  • Minimum 1.5 years of Operating Room (OR) experience
  • Operating Room experience within the last year

Clinical Skills

  • Ability to scrub and circulate in the Operating Room (scrub and circulate required)
  • Ability to float within skillset without exception
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Facility & Unit Information

  • 14 Operating Rooms serving pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations
  • No eye surgery performed
  • High-volume, multispecialty surgical program with advanced minimally invasive and complex procedures
  • Comprehensive robotic surgery program
  • Recognized for advanced surgical and critical care capabilities

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background & Screening

  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start
  • Employment history verification with minimum 7 years work history, including 1 year prior to start verified for New Jersey candidates
  • Drug screen (10-panel) within 30 days of start
  • References: 2 references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference

Health & Safety

  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol (within 3 months of start)
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start, with on-site fit testing mandatory
  • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if applicable

Competency & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 72 hours of signing contract
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for applicable units
  • IV Therapy/Infusion exam required for all RNs except OR specialties
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication exams with remediation policy

Additional Certifications (if applicable)

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Chemotherapy certification for oncology-related roles
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) for Mother-Baby and Labor & Delivery RNs
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs

  • Candidates must provide required documentation promptly; some documents are time-sensitive (e.g., driver’s license within 48 hours of signing)
  • Facility has strict policies on scheduling requests and call-offs
  • Candidates must complete annual education sign-offs and facility-specific orientation requirements prior to start
  • Floating policy must be acknowledged and completed for every new assignment or site transfer

Pros

Staff and management are very friendly. The ratios are pretty good. Sometimes it gets very busy and sometimes transport is put in by someone else before you even have the patient ready to go. They are very flexible with scheduling and their weekend requirements are reasonable.
