Overview

• Traveling ER RN in Southern Texas
• 12-hour shifts
• Nights
• Start ASAP
• 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• RN license
• 2 years experience
• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• TNCC
• Must pass the ADVANCED Dysrhythmia exam before signing the contract
• First-time travelers accepted

• NIHSS

Unit Details

• Level III trauma
• STEMI and Stroke Receiving
• 18 beds/trauma bays, including 4 critical rooms used for trauma or codes
• 6 Fast Track
• 1 separate psych/seclusion room
• 70 patients per day on average
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity
• Pediatrics-only hospital in the area that admits pediatric patients
• Common patient types include cardiac, STEMIs, strokes, some trauma, abdominal pain, respiratory, and GI
• Common drips include pressors and sedation
• MD in house 24/7
• 2 midlevels staggered during busy times
• Charge nurse generally does not take an assignment
• 2 PCTs per shift
• RT in the ER; RTs do ABGs, breathing treatments, and run vents
• RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment
• No monitor techs; RNs read and interpret strips
• X-ray and CT are right down the hall
• Phlebotomy is in the ER

Scheduling and Work Expectations

• Day and night shifts start at 6:45
• Midshifts start at 9, 11, 1, and 3
• Matrix scheduling with attempts to accommodate traveler needs
• Every other weekend
• Holidays are worked into the perm staff rotation
• No call or standby
• Travelers are first to float and may help as a hand if floated
• Call outs are strongly discouraged and could lead to termination
• May be asked to precept as needed by the unit

Orientation

• 1-3 shifts depending on experience
• Checkoff packet reviewed with a preceptor

• RNs are not responsible for setting up placement for psych patients
• Travelers are liked to extend
