Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Neuro ICU
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Description
- Neuro ICU is a 12-bed critical care unit specializing in intensive management of patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions.
- Common cases include:
- Central nervous system tumors
- Complex spine surgery
- Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
- Endovascular interventions
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Neuromuscular diseases
- Status epilepticus
- Central nervous system infections
Schedule
- Night shifts
- Every other weekend and every other holiday
- 36 or 48 hours available
- Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
- Time off approval up to 40 hours
Required Experience & Skills
- Specialty: Registered Nurse in Neuro ICU or critical care
- Must have experience with Epic electronic health record system
- NIH Stroke Certification required (can submit with certification pending)
- Adherence to facility float policy required
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Virginia RN license (can submit with license pending)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification (AHA, Apex, or AA CME accepted)
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Neuro ICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, education verification, and abuse registry search (if assigned to behavioral health or specific units)
- Drug screening (10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl)
- Immunizations and health screenings including:
- Tdap vaccination (no exemptions)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer, no exemptions)
- Hepatitis B surface antibody titer (positive required or follow-up antigen titer)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or titer; declination accepted but must be documented)
- Seasonal flu vaccination (required during flu season, no exemptions)
- Physical exam within 12 months attesting ability to meet physical demands of the position
- Professional appearance guidelines acknowledgment
- Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment during orientation (required for adult inpatient RN positions)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
Additional Notes
- Fingerprinting required for behavioral health assignments
- Some certifications like PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, CPI, and others may be required or preferred depending on unit assignment but are not specified for this Neuro ICU role
- References and performance evaluations may be required for credentialing
- Orientation includes pass/fail testing on cardiac rhythms and medication knowledge
This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs with Neuro ICU or neurological critical care background who are comfortable working night shifts and managing complex neurological patients in a fast-paced ICU environment.
