Job Opportunity: Clinical Lab Scientist (Laboratory)

Location: Mission Viejo, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Strong blood bank experience required.
• Work in a trauma hospital with frequent massive transfusions.
• Experience in hematology, chemistry, and/or blood bank is essential.
• May be scheduled to float between Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach locations.
• Weekend shifts may exceed every other weekend to meet department needs.
• Scheduling requests due to outside employment will not be considered.
• Local radius for work is 50 miles.
• Start date: ASAP.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of experience in the specialty (Laboratory).
• Prior travel experience: Not required (first-timers not accepted unless strong candidate).
• Licenses & Certifications:

  • California state license for Clinical Lab Scientist.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ASCP certification preferred but not required.
• On-call: Not required.
• Pending licenses: Not accepted.

Work Environment & Facility Highlights

• Acute Care Hospital setting.
• Total staffed beds: 488.
• Charting system: Epic.
• Free parking available.
• May be required to float to Providence Mission Laguna location.

Scheduling & Hours

• Block scheduling may be accommodated at manager’s discretion.
• Facility may call off once per two-week pay period.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background check within 45 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
• Drug screen: 10-panel within 90 days of start (no instant tests).
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO.
• Immunizations and health documents required:

  • TDAP (within 10 years or declination accepted).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months.
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declination.
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer.
  • Flu vaccine during flu season or declination.
  • COVID vaccine or declination.
• Fit mask testing required for travel workers (not required for Medical Lab Scientists).
• Respiratory safety clearance required for travel workers.

Training & Competency Requirements

• Completion of Providence Health and Services WorkRamp modules prior to start, including:

  • Core modules for profession.
  • Specialty-specific modules as applicable.
  • Regulatory and compliance modules annually.
• Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
• Skills checklist updated annually as applicable.

Additional Notes

• Floating between locations is a requirement; acknowledgment of float policy required.
• Scheduling flexibility limited; outside employment scheduling requests will not be accommodated.
• References: Minimum 2 supervisor references covering 1 year of employment in a comparable specialty/setting.
• Employment application must include at least last 5 years of employment with month/year format.
