Registered Nurse – CVICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work option: 36 or 48-hour shifts available; current opening is Night shift (4 shifts of 12 hours, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Unit: Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), a 20-bed specialty ICU for cardiovascular patients including stable heart/lung transplants, ventricular assist devices, and ECMO patients
- Patient acuity: High, with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:2-3 for both days and nights
- Floating: Frequent floating required within scope to various hospital units and potentially to a nearby campus
- Drip management required on all floors
- Charting system: EPIC experience required
- Facility is 100% nicotine-free
Required Qualifications
- License: Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; if not, start date delayed by six weeks)
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital; first-time travelers not accepted unless they have 2 years at a Level I Academic Medical Center
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – preferred
- Skills: Ability to manage drips and high-acuity cardiovascular patients
- Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required, but first-time travelers generally not accepted
Work Schedule & Requirements
- Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible weekend shifts in a 4-week period (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri night/Sat night)
- Holiday shifts: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Return to Office (RTO) blackout dates: June 11–22, 2026 (due to College World Series)
- RTO allowed up to 2 weeks, requests must be submitted with application; additional requests subject to manager approval
- Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility)
Facility & Uniform
- Scrubs: Mandatory Steele gray scrubs with facility logo on back (provided after confirmation)
- Parking: Permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking ($3 for 20 hours)
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and nationwide checks, sex offender registry, and federal criminal databases
- Ongoing monthly SAM and OIG checks required
- Education verification and primary source license verification required prior to start
- Annual physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+) required
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Tdap within last 10 years
- Annual TB testing or chest x-ray if history positive
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if low/equivocal)
- Hepatitis B titer or declination
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal)
- Drug screen within 60 days of start and annually (urine panel including multiple substances)
- Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
- COVID vaccine preferred (medical/religious exemption or declination accepted)
- Annual skills checklist required
- References: 2 work references from past 2 years (1 must be most recent employer if not a current traveler)
- State-specific registry checks and abuse/neglect registry searches required within 30 days of start
Additional Notes
- Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and sometimes LPNs
- Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)
- Facility is a top-rated acute care hospital with a teaching affiliation and advanced research programs
This position is ideal for experienced CVICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity cardiovascular patients, flexible floating assignments, and working night shifts in a large academic medical center environment.
