Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Fishersville, Virginia
Shift: Day, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients
  • Floating to other units is expected; confirmation of this understanding is required before finalizing the contract
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
  • Local candidates within 50 miles radius are not accepted
  • Holiday work policy:
    • If 1 holiday falls during assignment, expect to work it
    • If 2 holidays, expect to work 1
    • If 3 holidays, expect to work 2
  • Unit: 2 East – Dedicated Education Unit (22-bed unit focused on orienting new graduate nurses with foundational skills)
  • First-time travel nurses accepted

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Certifications (as applicable to unit)

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – required for certain units; verify if applicable
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – required for pediatric/ED/PACU units; verify if applicable
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – required for OB, LDRP, NICU, Nursery; verify if applicable
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – verify if applicable
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or equivalent – recommended for behavioral health or ED units; verify if applicable
  • NIH Stroke Certification – required for ICU, PCU, ED, Float Pool; verify if applicable

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, renewed annually
  • Negative 10-panel drug test within 30 days of start (including marijuana; zero tolerance policy)
  • Immunizations/vaccinations:
    • Tdap within past 10 years
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer; boosters allowed to start pending second dose)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters allowed to start pending second dose)
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • TB screening: Negative QFT Gold, T-Spot, or 2-step PPD within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and TB questionnaire required
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • Annual fit mask test (N95 preferred); onsite testing available
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (10/1 – 3/31); medical and religious exemptions allowed with facility-specific forms submitted two weeks prior to start
  • Multiple facility-specific policy acknowledgements and forms must be reviewed, signed, and submitted prior to start (e.g., confidentiality, dress code, social media, standards of conduct, masking requirements)

Background Checks and Documentation

  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start, including SSN trace and multi-state checks
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Facility will perform additional state police background checks and fingerprinting as applicable
  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Various competency exams and core testing required as applicable

Additional Notes

  • This position requires engagement as a preceptor on the Dedicated Education Unit, supporting new graduate nurses
  • Candidates must confirm understanding of floating expectations and holiday work policy before contract finalization
  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
