Job Opportunity: Cardiac Tele Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in Post Cardiac Cath Unit (PCCU) caring for pre- and post-cardiac catheterization patients and some emergency department overflow.
  • Responsibilities include pulling arterial/venous sheaths post-cath, managing TR bands, new pacemakers/defibrillators, and Watchman devices post-procedure.
  • Discharge patients typically within 24-48 hours post-procedure unless requiring CABG consult or transfer.
  • Patient population includes adults with diagnoses such as NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, atrial fibrillation/flutter, bradycardia, tachycardia, heart blocks, SVT, V-tach, sinus arrhythmia, and patients with AV pacemakers/defibrillators.
  • No chest tubes or critical drips; drips managed include Nitroglycerin, Angiomax, Heparin, electrolytes, fluids, and antibiotics.
  • Patient ratio: 1:5 on days, nights, and weekends.
  • First-time travelers are considered if they have cardiac patient experience.
  • Clinicians may be floated within scope to meet facility needs.

Schedule

  • Night shift only: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:30 - 07:00).
  • Every other weekend required.
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week.
  • Holiday time-off requests limited to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays.
  • Blocked schedule not guaranteed; discuss during interview if desired.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia.
  • Minimum of 1 year telemetry experience within the last year.
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • ACT certification.
  • AVOX certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Skills in central line draws, ports, PCA pumps, bone marrow aspiration assist, and Pleurx chest tubes.

Preferred Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification preferred

Patient Population

  • Adult cardiac patients requiring telemetry monitoring and post-procedure care.

Facility & Work Environment

  • Level IV Trauma Center, major teaching hospital with 838 staffed beds.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Scrub color for RNs: Royal Blue/White.
  • Free parking for travelers.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene).
  • Primary source verification of RN license within 30 days of start.
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start.
  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates: EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test (two attempts allowed).
  • Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) required; PAPR accommodations available if needed.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no limitations.
  • Negative TB test within 3 months of start or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history; annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Tdap, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B (or declination with documentation).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (October 1 - March 31) unless approved medical or religious exemption is documented and accepted.
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted.

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete annual specialty skills checklist demonstrating true skills; MS/Tele skills checklist required for Clinical Decisions unit.
  • One manager, supervisor, or charge nurse reference required from within 1 year of start date. Charge nurse references must confirm direct supervision.
  • Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training.
  • Candidates must review and acknowledge facility policies including blood administration, dress code, time and attendance, and medical release forms.
  • Candidates must complete required inservice training modules and submit certificates prior to start (estimated 4 hours).
  • Candidates cannot return as travelers within 2 years of last permanent employment at this facility.

Notes

  • No chest tubes or critical drips are managed on this unit.
  • Candidates with latex allergy must notify management to avoid exposure.
  • Flu vaccine refusal without approved exemption will disqualify candidate during flu season.
  • Facility enforces a 100-mile radius rule for travel distance; exceptions require approval.
