Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15)
  • Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 6 patients
  • Floating: Position is a float pool role; no home unit assigned. Floating regularly between approximately 5 Med/Surg Intermediate/PCU departments and other metro campuses as needed.
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination)
  • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments may be required as needed
  • Locals accepted within local radius
  • No block scheduling accommodation
  • No pending licenses accepted
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days off

Required Experience & Skills

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
  • Required Years of Experience: 2 years (higher value taken from range 1-2 years)
  • First-time travel nurses accepted
  • Skills required include:
    • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation and management, telemetry monitoring, rapid response team use)
    • Cardiovascular care (post-MI, pre/post cardiac catheterization)
    • Endocrine/metabolic management (IV insulin protocols)
    • Gastrointestinal care (feeding tube management)
    • Renal care (continuous bladder irrigation, pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure)
    • IV therapy and phlebotomy (port access, blood product administration, central line and PICC line care, starting IVs)
    • Medication management (heparin protocols, cardiac drips without titration, PCA)
    • Respiratory care (chest tubes, external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, oxygen delivery devices, tracheostomy management)
    • Wound care and isolation precautions
    • Surgical drain management

Certifications & Licenses

  • Active RN license valid in Kansas (no pending licenses accepted)
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred but not mandatory
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (refer to unit-specific requirements)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required (e.g., driver’s license or state ID)
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required annually
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination required
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity or vaccination/declination required
    • Hepatitis B declination required (vaccination not mandatory)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 - April 1)
  • Facility-specific compliance documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Completion of required orientation and training modules (approximately 16 hours) through the facility’s learning platform before starting assignment
  • Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required within 1 year of start, including dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with minimum 80% pass rate

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Kansas
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Information

  • Charting system: Epic
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Must be able to float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application and skills checklist must be submitted and approved prior to start
