Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work primarily on a 37-bed Medical Surgical, Oncology unit caring for general medical diagnosis patients and surgical cases including gastrointestinal, urological, and gynecological surgeries.
  • Patient population may include ortho/neurovascular, cardio/pulmonary, and surgical patients (e.g., hysterectomies, mastectomies).
  • Staffing ratio typically 1:5-6 at night; may flex to 1:8 with LPN support.
  • Floating to other Med Surg units approximately once per week based on unit needs.
  • Must work every other weekend.
  • Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed.
  • Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
  • Will work with a variety of staff including RNs, LPNs, and Techs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment.

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (AHA) required.
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CHEMO) – verify based on unit specifics.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam passed within 1 year prior to assignment start (minimum 80%).
  • Competency exam in specialty completed within 1 year prior to start (minimum 80%).
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, SSN trace, national/statewide searches, education verification, and motor vehicle record as applicable.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions; process coordinated via compliance team.
  • Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric, RRT, L&D, and certain specialty placements (not applicable here unless floated).
  • Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma.
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.
  • One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Proof of immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Measles (Rubeola) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Mumps – 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or documented declination.
  • Proof of 1 prior Tdap vaccine.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1; exemption requests must be submitted promptly.
  • 10-panel drug screen including marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if full panel).

Additional Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID).
  • Review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start.
  • Fit testing required if completing onsite (Honeywell DC365N95HC mask); appointment must be scheduled and documented.
  • Must complete MI Fingerprint Consent and Disclosure Form promptly to schedule fingerprinting appointment if applicable.
  • Must be willing to work holidays; holiday time off cannot be guaranteed.

Work Schedule & Conditions

  • 36 or 48 hours per week available; this position is 36 hours/week.
  • Night shift only (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each).
  • Floating to other Med Surg units expected approximately once per week.
  • Work every other weekend required.
  • No guarantee of block scheduling.

This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg RNs comfortable with a variety of patient types and flexible floating assignments on night shifts.
