Job Opportunity: Geriatric Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Salem, Massachusetts
Employment Type: Long-Term Assignment (LTA)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Unit: Geriatric Psychiatric Unit (Nights & Every Other Weekend, 36 hours per week)
• Patient Population: Geriatric adults with diverse mental health issues including anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, dual diagnosis, and medically acute patients requiring IVs, CPAPs, wound and diabetic care.
• Typical Patient Ratio: 1 RN to 7-8 patients
• Shift Details: Night shift with every other weekend coverage; rotating shifts required for day shift only (7a-7p, 11a-11p, 7p-7a)
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System: EPIC

Required Experience and Skills

• Valid RN license in Massachusetts
• Minimum 2 years of psychiatric nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing
• Experience working with adult patients in an inpatient setting
• Experience in charge nurse roles
• Proficient in using an automatic medication dispensing system (Omni Cell)
• Competent in care of diabetic patients
• Knowledgeable about psychotropic medications and their side effects
• Skilled in IV pump use
• Familiarity with Massachusetts Department of Mental Health regulations, including rights of inpatients, restraint and seclusion protocols, legal statuses, guardianship, healthcare proxy, and court-ordered medication

Required Certifications and Licenses

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association

Additional Requirements

• Floating between units may be required
• Completion of on-site AVADE training and lead EKG training offered
• Must comply with TB testing, respirator fit testing, and other health screenings as per facility policy
• Must pass medication exam with at least 80% within the past year
• Background checks including criminal, CORI, SSN trace, sex offender registry, and exclusion lists required
• Submission of recent resume, references, skills checklist, and other credential verifications required prior to onboarding

Summary

This position is ideal for an experienced psychiatric RN with a focus on geriatric patients, comfortable working night shifts and every other weekend, and capable of managing complex mental health and medically acute patients. Strong knowledge of psychotropic medications, state mental health regulations, and clinical nursing skills are essential.
