Job Opportunity: Clinical Lab Scientist

Location: Orange, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in a clinical laboratory setting with rotating start times (6 AM, 7 AM, 8 AM) and rotating holidays and weekends.
  • Shift schedule: 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts, variable days.
  • High-volume environment in a large hospital (300+ beds), processing 30-50 samples daily with a focus on blood bank work including type/screen and crossmatch.
  • Trauma Level I experience required; preference for teaching hospital experience.
  • Experience with Wellsky and Immucor instrumentation.
  • Must be able to work rotating weekends and holidays; weekend coverage may exceed every other weekend.
  • Scheduling requests due to outside employment will not be considered.
  • Local radius for travel is 50 miles.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) license in California.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS), including experience within the last year.
  • At least one completed travel assignment as a Clinical Lab Scientist.
  • Seasoned traveler experience specifically in blood bank.
  • Recent and current blood bank experience.
  • Experience working with Level I Trauma patients.
  • Experience working in a large hospital setting (300+ beds).
  • Experience with Wellsky and Immucor instrumentation.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
  • ASCP Blood Bank (ASCP-BB) certification required.

Certifications & Licenses

  • ASCP-BB certification required.
  • Other certifications may be preferred but not required.
  • Must hold a valid Clinical Lab Scientist license appropriate for California.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have experience in a Trauma Level I hospital.
  • Must be able to handle high volume blood bank workload.
  • Must be able to interview during Pacific Time daytime hours.
  • Must provide a percentage breakdown if multiple lab specialties are listed in the application.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO.
  • Background check within 45 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years.
  • Drug screening (10 panel) within 90 days of start.
  • Immunizations and health documents required: TB test, TDAP, MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Flu vaccine (seasonal), COVID vaccine or declination.
  • Fit mask testing required annually.
  • References: Minimum of 2 supervisor references covering 1 year of employment within the last 3 years in a comparable specialty/setting.
  • Employment application covering at least the last 5 years.
  • Completion of required regulatory and specialty-specific training modules prior to start.

Work Environment

  • Acute care hospital with Magnet recognition.
  • Free parking available.
  • Charting done in EPIC.
  • High volume, fast-paced clinical lab environment.

Notes

  • Prior travel experience in blood bank is explicitly required; first-time travelers will not be considered.
  • Weekend and holiday rotations are mandatory.
  • Scheduling flexibility is limited; outside employment scheduling requests will not be accommodated.
