NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - San Francisco, CA

Job Details

  • Location: San Francisco, California
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Shift: 12-hour rotating shifts (Day: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM / Night: 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Schedule: Variable shifts only; straight day shifts will not be accommodated
  • Contract Length: 9 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in California
  • Minimum 3 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Experience in ventilator management
  • Experience managing pulmonary artery lines
  • Experience with central line management
  • Experience with chest tube management
  • Ability to float to other UCSF Facilities
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with stable patients preferred

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Current and valid government-issued photo ID matching professional license
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, sex offender search, and education verification
  • Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start including physician statement of fitness to work
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved mask models required; onsite fit testing available as last resort)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years (no declinations accepted except medical exemptions)
    • Two negative TB tests (PPD, QuantiFERON, or Tspot) with specific timing requirements, or documentation for positive TB status
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required
    • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or declination (declination must be signed within 1 year)
    • Varicella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required (history of disease not accepted)
  • Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, re-run every 2 years
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or facility-specific declination required during flu season (Nov-Apr)
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required as of current policy
  • Completion of facility-specific learning modules prior to or on first day of assignment
  • Annual tuberculosis questionnaire required within 30 days of start
  • Emergency contact information must be provided
  • Cyber Security Awareness Training and Quiz required annually
  • HIPAA Healthcare Provider Module and Advanced HIPAA Module (for nursing staff) with passing quiz required annually
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) may be required depending on unit

Experience & References

  • Minimum 3 years of NICU experience required (highest applicable)
  • Two supervisory references required, preferably from most recent employment
  • Current and updated resume covering last 7 years of work history; gaps of 30 days or more must be explained
  • Verification of 7 years of work history required

Additional Notes

  • Must submit all Return to Office (RTO) requests at time of offer; late submissions will not be considered
  • Variable shifts only; candidates not open to rotating shifts should not apply
  • Pass/Fail Telemetry exam required for nurses working in critical care and telemetry units
  • Unit-specific skills checklist must be updated annually
  • Physical and health documentation must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to start date to allow for medical review
  • Onsite fit testing available only as a last resort; candidates must schedule and submit results accordingly
  • Facility scrubs provided; if not received prior to assignment, candidates may wear approved scrub colors until facility scrubs arrive

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity neonatal care and flexible rotating shifts in a Level IV NICU setting.
