Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Orthopedic Focus)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work a night shift schedule: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Unit is a 23-bed Medical Surgical Orthopedic unit in a Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Patient population includes traumatic hip fractures, elective spine surgeries, and other traumatic orthopedic injuries
  • Care involves pre/post-surgical orthopedic patients requiring heart monitors, drains, PCA pumps, and Ketamine drips
  • Unit uses a team nursing model partnering RNs, LPNs, and PCTs to care for patient groups; may also function in primary nursing as needed
  • Floating assignments possible within specialty clusters and other units including high-risk respiratory/COVID units
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
  • Navy blue scrubs required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • EKG competency
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Certifications & Health Requirements

  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for work and free of communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray documentation; annual TB questionnaire if past positive TB
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months prior to documentation due date; lab confirmation required for positives
  • Respiratory safety clearance required within 1 year of start and renewed annually

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to float to other units as assigned, including main and satellite campuses within 15 miles
  • Premier Health reserves the right to cancel up to 2 shifts per 13-week contract due to low census and may cancel contract with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty
  • Travelers are not eligible for employee incentives
  • Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required

  • Night shift on a 23-bed unit caring for orthopedic and medical-surgical patients
  • Patients often require telemetry monitoring and IV drips
  • Team nursing model promotes shared workload and patient care responsibility
