Surgical Technician – Pediatric Operating Room

Location: Tacoma, Washington
Shift: 12-hour Nights (1845 - 0715)
Hours per Week: 36
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work in a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center and Level IV NICU environment.
  • Patient population ranges from neonates to adults, including infants and developmentally delayed patients with congenital anomalies.
  • Surgical cases include a wide variety of specialties: pediatric traumas (MVAs, GSWs, shaken baby), neurosurgery (craniectomies, EVDs, shunts), spine surgeries (scoliosis repairs, spinal injuries), urology, gynecology, orthopedics, oncology, ENT, general surgery, dental, ophthalmology, and robotics-assisted procedures (DaVinci XI).
  • Floating assignments may include PICU and NICU cases on the same campus.
  • Weekend shifts are rare but possible, typically only on call.
  • On-call requirement: approximately 2 weeknights and 1 weekend every 6 weeks with a 30-minute response time.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years of acute Operating Room experience; if only 2 years, must be high-level experience. Candidates with combined adult and pediatric experience will be considered.
  • First-time travelers generally not accepted unless with 5+ years of extensive OR and pediatric experience.
  • Certifications and Licenses:
    • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
    • Washington State Surgical Technologist license
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Skills and Preferences

  • Highly preferred skills: robotics, advanced neurosurgery, ophthalmology, dental procedures. Candidates missing these skills require manager approval.
  • Proficient in scrubbing for the listed case types.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic medical records system.

  • Scrub color and free parking provided.
  • Compliance with standard healthcare requirements including immunizations, background checks, drug screening, and other credentialing documentation is mandatory.
  • Documentation and competency requirements include annual core competencies, flu documentation, and various health and safety certifications.
