Registered Nurse (ICU)

Location

  • Omaha, Nebraska

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Schedule

  • 12-hour shifts
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week
  • Shift times: 06:30–18:30 (day) and 18:30–06:30 (night)
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other, based on unit needs
  • Schedule created by manager based on unit needs (no self-scheduling)

Unit Details

  • Medical-Surgical ICU with 34 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
    • Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 1:4 to 1:5
    • Medical-Surgical: 1:5 to 1:6
  • Patient population: Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
  • Common diagnoses: respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure, general surgery, psych/overdose, GI bleeds, cancer surgeries, neuro surgery (experience not required)
  • Equipment and procedures: CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, ICP monitoring, rapid transfuser, Zoll Thermoguard hypothermia protocol
  • RNs titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and participates in rapid response teams and codes
  • Patient care techs available at a ratio of 1:18
  • Respiratory therapy equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow; RNs troubleshoot nasal cannula to vents
  • No telemetry/monitor techs; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips using Draeger centralized telemetry monitors
  • Floating required to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
  • Dress code: navy blue scrubs
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license
  • Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Valid driver’s license required at time of application (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
  • Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation (skills learned on unit)
  • Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination

  • Fast-paced tertiary hospital environment with volume fluctuations
  • Successful candidates demonstrate critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, willingness to ask questions, and collaboration with attendings and trainees
  • Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated health systems
  • Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
