Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Unit Type: Orthopedics & Spine Specialty
  • Unit Size: 36 beds (all private rooms)
  • Staffing:
    • Day Shift: 1 Charge Nurse, 8 RNs, 3 PCTs, 1 Unit Clerk
    • Night Shift: 1 Charge Nurse, 8 RNs, 3 PCTs
  • Patient Ratios: 5-6 patients per nurse
  • Typical Patient Acuity: Fast-paced med/surg acuity unit specializing in orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions (including stroke and head injuries), and trauma
  • Facility Type: Busy Level 2 trauma center with two freestanding Emergency Departments feeding into the unit

Work Environment & Technology

  • Staff use iPhone 7 devices with a secure communication app (Mobile Heartbeat/iMobile) for team communication and patient privacy
  • The unit recently expanded from 26 to 36 beds due to increased patient volume
  • EMR system: Meditech
  • Equipment includes traction devices, external fixators, halos, walkers, gait belts, bed alarms, continuous pulse oximetry, and remote telemetry monitoring

Schedule & Shift Details

  • Shifts:
    • Day: 06:45 AM – 07:15 PM
    • Night: 06:45 PM – 07:15 AM
  • Weekend rotation: Every 3rd weekend (sometimes every other weekend if on leave of absence)
  • Dress Code: Royal Blue scrubs required

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse License (Kansas)
  • BLS Certification
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Med/Surg or Telemetry acute care hospital settings
  • Acute care hospital experience on Med/Surg or Tele units is mandatory

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIH Certification (preferred but not required)
