Registered Nurse - Labor and Delivery

Location: Austin, Texas
Employment Type: Travel Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Overview

  • Labor and Delivery unit with 12 LDR beds, 5 Antepartum beds, 4 OB ED beds, and 3 OR rooms
  • Staff includes 72 team members (nursing, CST, schedulers)
  • Night shift staffing: 1 charge nurse, 10 RNs, 1 CST, 1 scheduler
  • Patient ratios range from 1:2 to 1:1 depending on acuity and transition
  • Equipment used: Alaris Pumps, CADD epidural pumps
  • Electronic Medical Records: CPN and Meditech
  • No call required
  • Scheduling is self-scheduled among team members
  • 4 weekend shifts required per scheduling period

Typical Procedures

  • Cesarean sections (C-sections)
  • Spontaneous vaginal deliveries (SVD)
  • Dilation and curettage (D&C), Dilation and evacuation (D&E)
  • Twin deliveries (both C-section and SVD)
  • Scheduled and emergent cesarean hysterectomy
  • Management of massive transfusion cases

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 3 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with High Risk Obstetrics patients
  • Certifications: ACLS, AWHONN, BLS, NRP

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with High Risk OB including massive transfusion protocols
  • Experience managing placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PASD)

  • Highly engaged, motivated, and team-oriented staff
  • Positive outlook and intentional in all interactions and procedures
  • Good mix of tenured staff and nurses with 1-2 years of experience on both day and night shifts
  • Physicians maintain strong, collaborative relationships with nursing staff
  • Management team is highly engaged and frequently rounds during night shifts and weekends

Additional Information

  • The unit is a Level III Maternal and Level II Neonatal care center, moving toward higher designations
  • Joint Commission accredited in Women’s services
  • Main Emergency Department is Level II Trauma, serving obstetrical patients with Level I and II injuries
  • Dress code includes CST sky blue scrubs; specific attire requirements apply
