Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
- On-Call: No call required
- Holiday Work: Required to work at least one holiday period (Christmas and New Year's specified)
- Floating: Must float within scope to meet facility needs between like units/sister facilities
Facility Overview
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- Main Operating Room with 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
- Charting system: EPIC
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, with OR experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Radiation Badge
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work holiday shifts as assigned
- Must be willing to float between similar units as needed
- First-time travelers accepted
- Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify)
- Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
- Social Security Card or SSN verification
- Background checks including:
- 7-year work/living history
- National and state criminal checks
- Sex offender registry
- FACIS 3 and international searches if applicable
- Education verification (diploma or transcripts preferred)
- NURSYS license verification (for RNs)
- Clinical references (minimum 2)
- Employment history verification (last 3 clinical employers)
Certifications and Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA or RQI acceptable
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) as required for pediatric units
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) as required (not required for ER RNs)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) as applicable
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Color blindness testing prior to start
- Fit testing for N95 masks (annual renewal required)
- Radiation Badge and prior radiation exposure attestation (if applicable)
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccination)
- Varicella (chickenpox) immunity or vaccination
- Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest x-ray if prior positive
- Annual TB questionnaire
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
Orientation and Onboarding
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Upload of COVID and flu vaccination documentation into facility system
- Passport-style photo for badge required before start
- Emergency response team assignment awareness (hurricane season June-November)
Notes
- Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down but total no more than 1 shift
- Parking permit required with a registration fee (approx. $20) for garage use; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
- Block scheduling accommodations require manager approval and depend on unit needs
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic OR nursing team. Candidates should be prepared for a fast-paced environment requiring flexibility and strong clinical skills in perioperative nursing.
