Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Rochester, New York

Shift: Night, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)

Job Summary

• Provide care in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with telemetry and stepdown-level patients.
• Patient population includes adults and geriatrics with long-term pulmonary conditions, ENT surgery, and other surgical cases requiring stepdown care.
• Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-5.
• Floating within skillset may be required.

Scheduling & Work Requirements

• Weekend shifts every other weekend.
• Must be available to work every other holiday if needed.
• Requests for time off or special scheduling must be submitted at time of application.
• The client may cancel up to three shifts during the contract without penalty.
• First-time travel nurses are accepted.
• Nurses residing within 75 miles of the facility are not accepted for this RN travel role.

Required Licenses & Certifications

• Active New York RN license (NY is not a compact state). Pending licenses are not accepted.
• Valid ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required.

Required Clinical Skills & Experience

• Experience with telemetry and stepdown care (PCU/DOU/IMC).
• Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
• Use of Rapid Response and Code teams.
• Oxygen administration via nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management.
• Management of cardiac drips (no titration) and blood product administration.
• Central and peripheral line care and management.
• IV therapy and phlebotomy.
• Adherence to isolation precautions.

Experience Requirements

• Specialty: Registered Nurse
• Minimum years of experience: Not explicitly stated, assume standard RN competency for PCU/Telemetry level care.
• Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted.

Orientation & Onboarding Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required.
• 7-year criminal background check (including felony checks) within 3 months of start.
• Education verification from primary source required.
• Various background checks including EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and sex offender registry.
• Foreign equivalency education evaluation required if education was obtained internationally.
• Drug screen within 30 days of start.
• Health-related requirements and lab work must be completed within 5 days of contract signing, including:

  • Physical exam (within 1 year).
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year).
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Flu seasonal vaccination (during flu season).
  • Snellen eye exam (within 1 year).
• Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required.
• State license verification and NURSYS verification within 30 days of start.
• Skills checklist and competency exams as required.
• Facility-specific documents and attestations must be completed.

Additional Notes

• Scrub color: Navy blue and white combinations.
• Facility is Magnet-recognized and an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center.
• Floating within the unit or related units may be required.

This position offers a structured 13-week travel contract with night shifts in a specialized PCU setting requiring strong telemetry and cardiac care skills, with comprehensive onboarding and credentialing requirements.
