Registered Nurse – PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)
Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 14 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Description
- Must have at least 2 years of Registered Nurse experience.
- First-time travelers are welcome (no prior travel experience required).
- Must be able to float to NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and Pediatrics units.
- Patient diagnoses commonly encountered:
- Respiratory Distress / Failure
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Seizures
- Pain Management
- Special procedures involved:
- Moderate Sedation
- Drips (IV medication infusions)
- Arterial Lines
- Central Lines / Central Venous Pressure (CVP) monitoring
Required Certifications
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- Other certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., ACLS, NRP, TNCC), but BCLS and PALS are mandatory.
Required Licenses
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Maryland with primary source verification.
- NURSYS verification required as applicable.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID) required; temporary paper receipts accepted only as placeholders until official ID is received.
- Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years; must be updated annually.
- Employment verification for at least 2 workplaces within the last 7 years (W2 or direct supervisor references accepted).
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming ability to meet essential job functions.
- Negative TB test (PPD, GOLD, or TSPOT) or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire updated annually.
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Immunizations/vaccinations:
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, and Rubella; boosters required if negative.
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or signed declination.
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer; boosters or proof of chickenpox history if negative.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31).
- Respirator fit test will be completed onsite; fit mask documentation required for new contracts.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete and sign facility-specific policies including:
- Floating policy for contracted staff
- Time and attendance policy for contracted staff
- Consent to release information
- Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required.
- EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam required if specified by unit; must be renewed annually.
- Stroke and Trauma CEUs may be required depending on unit; stroke CEUs must be completed prior to or within one week of start, trauma CEUs typically required after 27 weeks of work.
Summary
This is a night-shift travel Registered Nurse position in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit requiring a minimum of 2 years RN experience. The role involves caring for critically ill pediatric patients with complex diagnoses and requires flexibility to float to NICU and Pediatrics. Candidates must hold current Maryland RN licensure and have BCLS and PALS certifications.
