Job Summary

A Polysomnographic Technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and home sleep apnea testing (HSAT), diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and patient care. The technologist also provides sleep-related education and support to patients and families and oversees other sleep center staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Document patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing.
• Review and verify departmental orders and insurance/prior authorization.
• Review patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity.
• Acquire additional information from patients or providers as needed.
• Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting, desensitization, and education.
• Prepare patients for testing and select appropriate equipment.
• Document routine observations during testing and ensure data quality.
• Correlate physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation.
• Perform equipment calibration, cleaning, and disinfection following infection control policies.
• Provide age-specific care for all populations seen in the Sleep Lab.
• Implement patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions.
• Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events (respiratory, cardiac, limb movements, arousals) using professional guidelines.
• Generate accurate reports and analyze complex situations.
• Support quality and performance improvement initiatives.
• Perform ancillary testing such as oximetry, actigraphy, and home sleep apnea testing.
• Follow protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT).
• Maintain effective professional communication and relationships.
• Assist with supply requests and maintain work area orderliness.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Associate's Degree in Polysomnographic Technology OR
• Completion of a certificate program in Polysomnographic Technology

Experience

• Minimum 1 year of experience as a Polysomnographer, including experience within the last year

Certifications & Licensure

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association)
• Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) OR Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT)
