Overview

• Shift: Nights
• Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
• Facility: 54-bed unit

Required Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license, or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
• BLS
• NIHSS
• Level 1 trauma experience
• Previous travel experience
• Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
• Must be able to titrate drips
• Heparin gtt experience
• Negative drug screen required for all panels

Unit Details

• Patient ratios: days 1:4-5; nights 1:5-6
• Common patient types include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience, and some medical overflow
• Charge nurse is present 24/7 and does not take an assignment unless short-staffed and nurses would be above ratios
• House supervisor is present 24/7
• Nurse aides/patient care techs are on the unit
• High flow is used for stable COVID only, which is rare
• Telemetry is house-wide; nurses do not need to read strips

Scheduling

• Every other weekend
• Every other holiday
• No call or standby requirement
• Shifts are 12s
• Requests are tried when possible, and blocks may be made if staffing allows

Floating

• Floats in rotation with the rest of the staff
• When floated to the general unit floor, the traveler takes a full team
• If floated outside the general unit for urgent need, the nurse only performs skills they are competent in and is assigned with a nurse trained for that unit

Orientation

• 2 days of orientation, including computer and unit-specific training with an educator and one patient-care shift with a preceptor

Other Notes

• Local placements within 50 miles are accepted
• Tattoos must be covered while on duty
• No piercings besides ears
