ICU Float Pool Nurse (CO Springs/Zone 1) - Centennial, Colorado
Position Overview
- Specialty: ICU Float Pool (Combination of MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.)
- Location: Centennial, CO (Zone 1 - 60 mile radius around Colorado Springs)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Floating: Required to float throughout the entire zone (multiple facilities within 60 miles). No home base facility.
- Shift: 7am-7pm; schedule set by leadership for 6 weeks at a time
- Weekend Requirement: 6-9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule
- Holiday Requirement: May be asked to participate in holiday rotation
- Call/Standby: Rare, only for low census
Experience & Certifications
- Required ICU Experience: Minimum 2 years ICU experience
- Preferred: Prior travel experience preferred
- If first-time traveler: Must have 3+ years ICU experience and Epic electronic health record experience
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
- TNCC
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- Comfortable titrating all critical drips including:
- Pressors
- Sedation
- Paralytics
- Antiarrhythmics
- Heparin
- Insulin
- Nurse:Patient Ratios:
- 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity
- May flex up to 1:3
- 1:1 for high acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella)
- No nurse aides on unit except for sitter needs
- Respiratory Therapy:
- Designated RT for ICU but may not be on unit 24/7
- RNs expected to assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management
- Equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow, breathing treatments
- Telemetry:
- No telemetry techs on unit
- RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips
Orientation & Training
- 1-2 days unit/department-specific orientation with a preceptor
- Week of orientation requires clinician to be in-state (modules may be remote)
Additional Notes
- Must submit driver’s license for radius verification
- Schedule requires flexibility to fill gaps in permanent staffing
- All time off requests must be submitted prior to assignment start
- Scrub color/dress code: Any color
- Charge nurse present on each unit; typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary (more common on night shift)
This role is ideal for experienced ICU nurses comfortable with floating across multiple ICU settings within a large geographic zone and managing high acuity patients with complex critical care needs. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory if the nurse has extensive ICU experience and Epic proficiency.
