Respiratory Therapist - West Virginia
Location

Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Job Description
- Provide respiratory therapy services in a community hospital setting.
- Work across a wide variety of inpatient units including adult ICU, ER, and pediatric inpatient and family birthing units (no C-sections).
- Perform breathing treatments, ventilator management (up to 8-9 vents in ICU), arterial blood gas (ABG) draws and analysis, and EKGs (inpatient and outpatient).
- Assist with intubations (not independently).
- May initiate CPAP on infants.
- Cover inpatient areas, emergency department, outpatient EKGs, and outpatient bronchoscopies in procedural settings.
- No coverage required for Sleep Lab, Pulmonary Rehab, or Cardiac Rehab.
- No critical care transporting outside the facility.
- Floating required only within the facility.
- Work rotating day and night shifts (12-hour shifts): 06:45–19:15 and 18:45–07:15.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend; travelers may opt to work only weekends.
- Holiday work required if scheduled (Christmas and New Year's only).
- No call or standby call required.
Patient Population
- Primarily adults, with some pediatric and neonatal patients.
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3 years of respiratory therapy experience.
- Experience required in ER, ICU, and adult inpatient care.
- Pediatric experience preferred; training available.
- Must be skilled with ventilators, ABGs, BiPAP, infant vents/CPAP, resuscitation, and EKGs.
- Ability to place arterial lines preferred.
Certifications & Licenses
- Must hold a current West Virginia Respiratory Therapist license.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) via NBRC required; Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) preferred.
- ACLS and BLS (AHA) required.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), PALS, and STABLE certifications preferred.
- Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license.
- Any licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission.
Orientation & Training
- First day: general orientation.
- Second day: classroom orientation and modules.
- Approximately 3 days of shadowing with a preceptor before independent assignments.
- Skills assessment conducted onsite to determine appropriate assignments.
Work Environment & Staffing
- Department typically staffs 7 respiratory therapists during the day and 5 at night.
- Therapists may perform 40-70 treatments per day.
- Lead therapist or supervisor available for support.
- Open ICU with hospitalist coverage 24/7 and pulmonologists on staff.
- Physicians and residents may perform intubations.
Dress Code & Appearance
- Professional scrubs of any color.
- Professional appearance required.
- No long nails; men must be clean-shaven.
Equipment Used
- Ventilators: Puritan Bennett 840, Hamilton C1 (invasive, non-invasive, high flow), Avea.
- BiPAP: Bipap v60.
- High flow oxygen: Vapotherm.
