CVOR Tech Opportunity

Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Facility: St Alexius Health Bismarck Medical Center
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Department: CVOR Tech
  • Number of CVOR Suites: 2
  • Average Cases per Day: 1-3 (includes thoracic and vascular cases)
  • Common Cases:
    • Open hearts (CABG, Valve, aneurysms)
    • Thoracotomies
    • VATS
    • Convergent procedures
    • AAA repairs
    • Carotids
    • ION robotic cases
    • ECMO
    • Impella 5.5
    • Stryker towers

Required Certifications & Experience

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or NCCT
  • North Dakota UAP (Unlicensed Assistive Personnel) certification
  • Minimum 2 years of CVOR experience
  • Experience with open hearts, CABG, and valve cases
  • Must be able to first scrub
  • Willingness to cross-train into general OR if CV volumes are low
  • Willingness to float to the floor as a 1:1 sitter to supplement hours during low case volume

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift Hours: 6:45 AM - 3:15 PM, Monday to Friday
  • Start at 6:00 AM for Open Heart Case Prep (notified the day before)
  • Call 3-4 times per week on weeknights (3:15 PM - 6:45 AM)
  • Weekend call every 2nd to 3rd weekend (Friday 3:15 PM to Monday 6:45 AM)
  • Rotating holiday call required
  • Call response time: 15 minutes
  • 8-hour reprieve shifts post-call
  • Sleep room available; nearby housing should be available for call coverage

Orientation & Training

  • 4-5 days unit-based orientation
  • 2 buddy call shifts (flexible based on recent heart experience)

Additional Information

  • Charge Nurse coverage on all shifts (7 AM - 11 PM M-F, weekends 7 AM - 7 PM)
  • Manager available until 4 PM M-F
  • Scrub color/dress code provided
  • Family atmosphere in the department
  • Floating to other OR specialties (ortho, general) and second scrub cross-training required if CV volumes are low
  • Floating to floor as 1:1 sitter required to supplement hours during low case volume
  • Refusal to float results in unpaid supplemental time off (RDO day)
  • Ability to pick up extra shifts for 1:1 sitting available
  • Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and may not be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity)
  • Return to onsite (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start

This role is ideal for experienced CVOR Techs who are flexible, willing to cross-train, and comfortable with a variety of cardiovascular and thoracic surgical cases.
