Labor and Delivery RN

Job Overview

  • Specialty: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse
  • Location: New Haven, Connecticut
  • Employment type: Per diem
  • Shift: Day, 12-hour shifts, 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • Weekly commitment: 4 shifts per month

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut
  • Labor and Delivery (2 years of experience)
  • Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
  • BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Experience with Epic

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACLS certification
  • AWHONN Beginner certification
  • Experience in a teaching hospital
  • Experience with high-risk antepartum care
  • Experience in a trauma level I setting

Key Clinical Skills

  • External and internal fetal monitoring
  • IUPC placement and calibration
  • Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
  • IV starts and maintenance
  • Blood draw
  • Infusion pumps, drips, and IV monitoring
  • Medication management including antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline, anticoagulants, and antiseizure medications
  • Assist with high-risk and vaginal deliveries
  • C-section circulation and recovery
  • Forceps/vacuum extraction
  • Neonatal resuscitation and newborn assessment
  • Breastfeeding and lactation support
  • Foley catheter insertion and management
  • Postpartum care, including fundus, lochia, perineum, and wound care
  • Care for multiple births and postpartum hemorrhage
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension management

Schedule and Orientation

  • 4–5 days of orientation
  • Virtual orientation, in-person HR orientation, and unit orientation included
  • Epic training is provided for candidates without Epic experience; test-out is available for experienced candidates

Additional Notes

  • Patient ratio: 1:2
  • Scrubs provided in royal blue
  • First-time travelers are accepted
  • Previous permanent employees must have a 1-year separation period
  • Flu declinations are accepted; COVID vaccination is not required
  • Candidate must be able to commit to 4 shifts per month and complete compliance items by the required deadlines
