Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU/MedSurg

Location: Bloomington, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a mixed acuity unit combining Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) patients.
  • Must be comfortable working across PCU and MedSurg as needed.
  • Shift options: 3x12-hour shifts or 4x12-hour shifts.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:5.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • On-call: Not required.
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs.
  • Block scheduling: To be discussed.
  • Locals not accepted.
  • Pending license accepted, but must obtain Indiana (IN), compact, or temporary license prior to start.
  • Required to work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Guaranteed hours vary by shift pattern (36-48 hours/week).

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patient diagnoses include cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiology, endocrine, and oncology.
  • Unit includes CVICU with a large population of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery patients (CABG, TAVR, SAVR, MVR, VATS).
  • Additional patient populations include flex acuity MedSurg, progressive care, and ICU-level cardiovascular and oncology patients.
  • All private rooms equipped with overhead lifts.
  • Telemetry monitoring available.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
  • Minimum 1.5 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with PCU experience within the last year.
  • Experience working comfortably on a mixed acuity PCU/MedSurg unit.
  • Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) nursing experience.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
  • National Tech Certification Verification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience managing dysrhythmias.
  • Experience caring for patients after cardiac surgery.
  • Experience with TAVI/TAVR (transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation/replacement).
  • Experience managing arterial lines.
  • Experience managing central lines.
  • Experience managing PICC lines.
  • Experience titrating cardiac drips.
  • Experience titrating vasoactive drips.

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Shift length: 12-hour shifts.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Floating within scope expected.
  • No on-call duties.
  • Block schedule accommodations possible.

Facility & Work Environment

  • Short-term acute care facility.
  • Approximately 210 staffed beds.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Free parking.
  • Scrub color: black bottoms and red top.

Additional Requirements & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport required.
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender, education verification, and others required.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (N95 or approved respirators).
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season.
  • Competency exams and skills checklist required.
  • Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment with supervisory titles.
  • Employment application with full work history and explanation of gaps required.

  • Locals are not accepted for this assignment.
  • Pending licenses accepted but must be obtained before start.
  • Must be willing to float within scope.
  • Prior charge nurse experience preferred but not mandatory.
  • No on-call responsibilities.
  • Must meet holiday work requirements.
