ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Connecticut, New Haven


Position Overview

  • Role: Registered Nurse (RN) in Cardiac ICU (CTICU)
  • Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Patient Ratio: Average 1:2 (days and nights)
  • Work Schedule: Weekend required every other weekend
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to other high-volume cardiac ICUs
  • Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
  • Charting System: Epic

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 3 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Proficient with Swan-Ganz catheter monitoring

Job Requirements & Compliance

  • Background Checks: 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, including SSN trace, national sex offender, federal and state checks
  • Education Verification: Highest level of education must be verified; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated candidates
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency exam required within 12 months, minimum passing score 85%
  • Color Blind Testing: Required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024, minimum passing score 80%
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam: Required for ICU RNs
  • Physical Exam: Required within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test: Required within 12 months of start and must be updated annually; candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen required within 12 months of start
  • Immunizations & Health Documentation:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
    • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for certain specialties (not required)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity or vaccination required
    • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination or declination accepted
    • Varicella immunity or vaccination required
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season
    • COVID vaccination preferred but not mandatory

    • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
    • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
    • Pyxis ES MedStation Training
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
    • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health, Home Health)
    • New Employee Orientation Module
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
    • ED Handbook (for ER/ED RNs only)
    • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap >6 months or module updated)
    • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)
  • EPIC Testing: Optional but highly encouraged for ER RNs with prior EPIC experience to fast track orientation

Additional Notes

  • Floating: RN will float to other high-volume cardiac ICUs as needed
  • RTO (Return to Office) Restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
  • Work History: Must include 7 years of work history with no gaps greater than 90 days; employment verification required for last 7 years
  • References: Supervisor reference required for Cardiac ICU assignments
  • Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required; first-time travelers accepted with appropriate ICU experience
