Job Description
- Function as a member of the multidisciplinary surgical team providing a safe environment for surgical patients of all ages.
- Assist perioperative nurses with patient care and prepare/maintain supplies in the operating room (OR).
- Perform scrub role: prepare, organize, and anticipate needed instruments, supplies, and equipment for safe patient care and operative procedures.
- Will not first assist with procedures or perform incision closures.
- May apply skin staples after physician/PA/APRN has approximated skin edges.
- May apply skin sealant and steristrips as part of dressing after skin closure.
- Practice aseptic technique and infection control principles in the OR.
- Pass surgical instruments and supplies safely and efficiently in OR and labor and delivery room.
- Identify, preserve, and manage tissue and fluid specimens and cultures properly.
- Manage supplies, instruments, and equipment according to procedure.
- Assist nurse in perioperative care including transporting, positioning, and counting/prepping surgical instruments and supplies.
- Deliver medications received in the surgical suite to the appropriate OR.
- Handle and prepare medication for use on the sterile field under direct supervision of RN and physician.
- Participate in unit-based activities, staff meetings, and committees.
Equipment Used
- Computer systems: electronic charting system, surgical video and routing equipment.
- Surgical equipment: Storz Video equipment, Midas, Stryker drills, Leica Microscopes, Storz morcellator, Force Triad and Force FX cautery machines, Aquamantys machines, Ostemoed drills, fluid warmer/cooler.
- Surgical beds/positions: Jackson spine and fracture tables, Tenent positioner, Skytron and Getinge OR beds.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or successful completion of a formal Surgical Technologist program (on-the-job training not accepted).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a busy surgical area.
- Strong experience in at least 3 to 4 of the following areas:
- General surgery: robotic and open procedures
- Orthopedics: fractures, total joints
- ENT: pediatrics, T&A’s, BMT’s, parathyroid, thyroid, neck, ear, sinus procedures
- Vascular: carotid, AAA, hybrid cases, open procedures
- Robotics: da Vinci XI system (must have strong experience)
- Experience in GYN and Urology robotic and open procedures preferred.
- Dental and plastics experience preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- CST certification preferred.
Schedule
- Shift: 11:00 AM – 11:30 PM
- Hours per week: 36
- Some on-call may be required depending on volume.
Additional Information
- May float to another campus approximately 3 miles away.
- Unit has a 7-room surgical suite.
- Scrubs provided; no shoes with holes allowed.
- Orientation includes hands-on training during the first week focusing on common cases for the shift.
